Power Cable - Facts And Information

Posted by Admin on March, 27, 2012

A Power Cable is a combination of two or more electrical conductors that are bonded together and covered with a sheath. They are used for the transmission of electrical power. The conductors used in Power Cables are stranded copper or aluminum. These Power Cables are used in various machinery, mobile tools and portable devices. Power Cables are available in various materials and makes that have their special properties. These cables can be single-conductor or multi-conductor. All these different types of cables have their own advantages. There are three main components of Power Cables-

  • Conductors
  • Insulation
  • Protective jacket

The construction and material of Power Cables depend on the following factors:

  • Working voltage- It determines the thickness of the insulation.
  • Current-carrying capacity- It is associated with the cross-sectional size of the conductors.
  • Environmental conditions (exposure to sunlight, chemical, water and temperature, mechanical impact, etc.)- It determines the composition and construction of outer cable jacket.

The Major Types Of Power Cables Are As Follows:

Single Conductor Power Cables- These Power Cables include, DLO, locomotive, welding and stage lighting cable. All these have certain differences in flexibility, voltage, amps and insulation types that result in difference in their prices.

  • Welding cables- These Power Cables are very cheap. Welding Cables are available with flexible copper strands and a rubber jacket that is rated for 600 volts.
  • DLO cables- These cables have less flexibility. They can carry 2000 volts and are made up of tinned copper strands and a rubber jacket. DLO Cables are relatively expensive as they can carry more power.

Multi conductors Cables- These Power Cables have portable cords and rubber jackets that provide resistance against outdoor weather and wear and tear. These are perfect for industrial applications.

  • SOOW- This cable is a thick cable that is used to supply electrical power to tools and generators on the job sites. SOOW is highly durable and flexible. It provides excellent resistance against oil, water, chemicals, abrasion, etc.

Multi conductors Cables also include portable cord, extension cord, Type W and Type G-GC. All these various types of Power Cables are loaded with numerous advantages that are useful in fulfilling so many industrial, as well as domestic applications. They are highly flexible and ensure longevity. Thus these wires are considered best for the transmission of electrical energy.
